:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jan -- Documents a true American treasure : Brenda did an outstanding job of drafting the 225 blocks in the quilt. Each is accompanied by a small photo of the block from the quilt. While the photo is small, it is large enough to see the fabrics used in the original in case one wants to try to reproduce it. Throughout the book there are photos of quilts that others have made using some or all of the patterns. Some are made using reproduction fabrics and some are quite modern in style; very interesting to see. Also throughout the book is a running journal of sorts in the form of letters to Jane Stickle in which Brenda recounts her experiences with the quilt, with drafting the blocks and some very interesting historical tidbits. It should be noted that this is NOT a how-to book. There are some very general quilt making instructions and what Brenda found works for her in the introduction; the book was written presuming some knowledge and experience on the part of the reader. I found this to be a wonderful book documenting a true American quilt treasure. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2016 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from V. Puente -- Useless. Don’t waste your money! : Useless. Obviously the quilt is a treasure but this book is not. It simply has the drawings of the blocks ( something you easily find online ) but zero instructions on how to make the blocks! I wasted my money and I am very angry ( Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2021 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from A Tackett -- Not Worth the Money : If you can look at the pictures of the quilt and draw the quilt block on a piece of paper, then you have the extent of the "patterns" in this book. The outlines of the quilt blocks can be traced (or photocopied) and then cut out for use as templates to make blocks. You will need to add 1/4" around all of the cut out pieces. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from GG -- Fascinating book... : Includes a lot of history, the patterns are wonderful! I am so glad to have a copy of Dear Jane , one of the best quilt books ever. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from stargazer -- I love this book : I love this book. You get a picture of each block individually and a template for making it, but no instructions on how to make it. For that I had to check the internet and finally found a blog called That Quilt that gave me lots of good tips. If you love quilting and enjoy reading about the history of quilts you'll want to buy this book. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from regularshopper -- Inventive quilt piecing : This book illustrates the many blocks from the original quilt, including close up photos of the blocks and line drawings that are drafts for anyone to complete similar blocks. I checked this book out from the library, flipped through the pages one time, and knew that I wanted my own copy. I'm not likely to make this particular quilt, but I am likely to use some of its patterns as inspiration. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2015 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Candice Glade -- A Real Treasure : There are so many unique patterns in this book that it is a bit overwhelming. The letters to Jane are a wonderful way to share the history that this quilt represents. I wish the pattern pieces were numbered for paper piecing instead of having to buy the software to print copies of the patterns. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from beverly j smith -- Love it! : I simply love this book. I cannot believe that someone had made this detailed quilt during the civil war considering the amount of limited resources of that era. Brenda has done a fabuluous job of recreating the patterns. I can understand how you can become addicted to making these squares! For myself so far I have made 21 squares and would like to make a square a day, but that is impossible working full time. I have been hand sewing these "little Janes" on my down time when watching tv and enjoy watching the squares come together! If i never get it finished, I will have enjoyed trying as it helps to take you to another time and place and wonder about life when things were slow-paced! - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Waytookeane -- For "patterns" read "illustrations", but otherwise and nice book : I bought this for my wife for her to get some ideas about her next quilting project. It's a rare enough book, but a nice find. Just be aware that when it says "patterns" it does not mean "instructions" in the same way as some crafters might think. It would probably be better described as "illustrations", since it shows the shapes of the panels, but does not show you cutting outlines for the pieces. You get the general idea from it, but you'll have to decide what bit gets sewn to what bit. Nice illustrations and good colour make it a worthwhile purchase ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 3, 2015 )
