:- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Steven S. Vrooman -- Read it twice : On first read I wanted this book to be better. I felt like there were bits of the art (especially the Dad's lawn and the last few pages) which were excellent and evocative and there were bits of the story that I liked. But I also found it profoundly depressing, probably because it felt cliche. But on second look, I think Johnson does a fine job of playing with two different sets of cliches, the drugs-are-bad-and-will-ruin-your-life cliche and the wayward-kid-with-bad-friends-finally-figures-it-out-before-it-is-too-late cliche and teases us with both. The nice but challenging ending plays even better when you read from the beginning a second time. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2006 )

It's a beautiful stark essay on expectations and life. Growing up, going to private school. Being an observer of the world. Amazing work. One of my top ten graphic novel picks for sure. My only complaint is that it seems to end abruptly, as if the artist and writer simply became exhausted and could not go on. Which would be understandable, given the remarkable effort that must have gone into what work there is. Besides the moving story, I learned a lot about Hawaii that I never knew, which seems to have been part of the point. Mainlanders imagine Hawaii as a kind of fabulous wealthy paradise filled with retired pediatricians. This book gives the lie to that idea. In many ways we empathize with the protagonist's desire to escape the cookie-cutter universe of prep-school-college-house-in-the-burbs, but we shudder to see how destructively he channels that desire. Methamphetamine abuse is a timely issue and it is portrayed frankly here, without knee-jerk media stereotypes but also without glorification. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2008 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Todd Bernardy -- It was good : The dialogue was good. I like the way each character interacted with each other. Johnson did a good job of demonstrating how noisy life can be with the word bubbles drawn over each other. It seemed like the high school in this story was a constant stream of interruptions, which is how I remember my high school. The pacing was great. I like the way Johnson cut his panels with drawings with graphs or technical drawings. I thought the use of these technical drawings lent a meta-fictional component to the overall narrative. I live on Maui and I think he did a good job disguising certain places or names. I think its kind of interesting the way artists will obscure certain features of the subject they depict. - 1.0 out of 5 stars from Kenya Starflight -- Cliched, unpleasant, and heavy-handed story not helped by problematic artwork : Am I seriously in the minority here? Am I the only one who doesn't understand why this graphic novel is getting such rave reviews from both critics and the readership in general? All I know is that I picked this book up because the minimalist artwork on the cover drew my eye, refreshingly different from the colorful and "busy" artwork normally found on the covers of graphic novels. I had no idea the book was going to sink into a dreary anti-drug fable almost immediately, and the artwork, flat characters, and story that ultimately goes nowhere do this book no favors.
